Show Your Appreciation, Support TEA Dear fellow USTCers, Relax - the Alumni Foundation is not going into the business of selling some fancy tea. TEA here is short for Teaching Excellence Award, a new program we just launched this year to recognize USTC faculty members who are dedicated to the teaching of fundamental courses. Although USTC has pretty much been a science school all along, USTC alumni have been very successful in many other disciplines, such as engineering, finance, business, etc. Contributing to such success is the solidness and broadness in scientific fundamentals and strength in problem solving, which has been a hallmark of USTCers around the globe. Being a USTCer, the rigorous and extensive scientific training we received at USTC is always something to be proud of, and the dedication of those excellent USTC faculty members who carried that out are always for us to appreciate. But nowadays since universities in China measure achievements mostly by research, and oftentimes the amount of research conducted, faculty members are less willing to spent time preparing and conducting the teaching of fundamental courses, which often come with big class size and heavy work load. Unfortunately USTC is not immune from this problem. Because of this, the Alumni Foundation established the Teaching Excellence Award this year, to recognize members of USTC faculty who are still dedicated to teaching, and to promote the awareness of the importance of solid fundamentals. Prof. Liu Tonghuai (Dept. of Electronic Science) and Prof. Yin Min (School of Science) won the first two TEA this year, which is at $1500 each. Again, the Alumni Foundation is not planning to start any business, but without your donation we may have to do that one day :). So please show your generous support to our programs such as the TEA, and help USTC to carry on the heritage we all cherish, and pass on the strength we have all benefited from.
