Reignite the Passion
===========================================
Congratulations from USTC Alumni Foundation
http://www.ustcaf.org
Dear USTC 1981ers,
We, members of the governing board of the USTC
Alumni Foundation, take great pleasure in
congratulating you for your grand 20-year reunion
on USTC campus. It is time to celebrate your
accomplishment in the past 20-years, you have
brought honor and pride to our common alma mater,
the University of Science and Technology of China!
If you don't already know --
USTC Alumni Foundation was the FIRST alumni
foundation for major Chinese universities. It was
founded in 1995 by overseas alumni independent
of USTC committed to networking global alumni
resources to promote the prestige of USTC and
excellence of its people;
USTC Alumni Foundation was the FIRST alumni
foundation for major Chinese universities with
IRS 501(c)(3) status -- all donations are TAX
deductible.
USTC Alumni Foundation was the FIRST charitable
organization in Chinese community to post all its
transactions online for public scrutiny. It is managed
by an unpaid all-volunteer governing board elected
by all donors. Its operation cost (mostly credit card
fee and mailing cost) has been kept well under 1%
in recent years.
During the past 11 years, thousands of USTCers
have put together close to $600K, among which
more than A-quarter-million-dollar has been used in
relieving financial burdens for needy students
and helping USTC to recruit outstanding highschool
students, retain talented young researchers,
encounrage dedicated teachers who will shape
the future of USTC.
We would like to take this opportunity to
acknowledge the contributions from close to
60 alumni in 1981 Grade totaling more than
$30K (excluding corporate matching) in the past
11 years to our common cause in helping USTC
and its people. In particular --
* BAI Dawei(814) and WEN Pingshan(8111) were
among the 21 co-founders for the USTC Alumni
Foundation in 1995. Among the first 10 donors
in June 1995, the first operating month for
USTCAF, 4 are from 81 Grade.
* ZHANG Hong(818), who is hardly the richest
man in 81 Grade, not only ranks the highest
in terms of individual contribution among
81ers (he donated close to $7K in 20 times),
but also became a legend when he finished
the 1999 Boston Marathon representing USTCAF
which helped raising at least $20K for our
Goodwill Program.
* ZHANG Bing(810/8111) has been the one doing
the tedious job of processing donations for
USTCAF for the past FIVE years, handling
thousands of transaction totaling more than
$300K.
* Early 2006, Class 813/8112 initiated the 813
Fund under USTCAF which helps the financially
challenged students, promotes academic
excellence and encourages entrepreneurship.
So far 813 Fund has raised closed to $15K
ranking among the top 5 among special subfunds
under USTCAF.
These are fine examples of vision, dedication and
passion demonstrated by people from 1981 grade.
A quarter century ago, you fellow 1981ers started
pursuing your dreams at the peaceful and beautiful
USTC campus, that's where we have received the
second-to-none college education, built lifetime
friendship, shared stories of love and bitterness.
20-Year reunion is a good time to look back and
celebrate. It is also time to reignite the passion
and look forward to the future for ourselves and
our alma mater.
USTC Alumni Foundation invites you to join our
journey to make that future ever brighter. Our
long term goal is to network increasingly rich
global alumni resources and build a multi-billion
dollar endowment to provide independent funding
for USTC development. With the challenge USTC is
facing, your help and contribution is needed and
appreciated TODAY.
Just for your information, on June 2, 2006, LIU
Yadong(774) pledged $75K (RMB 600K) to
award dedicated USTC teachers; Back in 2000,
Zou Xinyu(824) donated $35K stocks to initiate the
Young Faculty Career Award; Much younger Grade
1985 have donated accumulated $45K in the past
11 years.
We challenge Grade 1981 to set a new record
of contribution on top of the existing accumulated
$30K in the past 11 years -- to serve as a
benchmark to be matched by future class reunions.
We encourage high-networth 81ers to consider
making contribution designated for high impact
projects to promote the prestige of USTC and
excellence of its people;
We invite all classes in Grade 1981 to set up
class fund similar as 813 fund under USTCAF.
We call caring 1981ers to join the ranking of
USTCAF volunteers to help manage and grow
this endowment for the future of USTC.
Together we have touched many hearts;
Together we shall reclaim the glory of USTC;
Together we make a difference.
Congratulations again and wishing you an exciting
and memorable reunion back on USTC campus.
With best regards,
USTC Alumni Foundation Governing Board
